This initiated a liminal period in Apess’s life when he wandered through the region penniless and dependent on peoples’ charity. He made his way to where some of his “brethren” (that is, other Natives) lived and where he tarried before setting off for Montreal. ” He received a few warnings about his intoxication but finally lost this job after an encounter in a tavern with one of the “king’s soldiers,” whom he abused and beat, in the process breaking a jug for which he had to pay. Stealing some of his master’s money to make reparation, he was caught and summarily fired (66–68).
The loss was a disaster, for Hampton’s advance had been planned as part of a pincer movement to secure Montreal. General James Wilkinson, head of the American troops at Sackett’s Harbor to the west, was to have led his men down the St. Lawrence and approach the city from the west, to join Hampton, a Virginian new to the command, coming from the south. To complicate the comedy of errors, Wilkinson and his immediate subordinate, General John P. Boyd, failed to carry out their part, too. 12 In the spring, Apess’s unit received orders to join Wilkinson’s forces in an attempt to subdue Montreal.
As the next ministerial conference in the area approached, though, one of the circuit preachers counseled Apess to desist temporarily from exhorting because he lacked a formal license to do so. Some might think it presumptuous to do so without approbation, this man confided, and this might damage his chances when he applied formally to the conference for the privilege. For a while Apess heeded this advice, but he soon returned to his lay exhorting. When the presiding elder for the area heard of this, he censured Apess and asked him to admit his error, but Apess refused.
