Children with Down syndrome are readily recognised by their physical features, particularly their facial characteristics with upward slanting eyes and snub nose. Pictures of smiling, happy children with Down syndrome are often used in charity advertising and for fundraising purposes because most people in the community readily associate their physical appearance with intellectual disability. Despite the impression that all Down syndrome children are happy, friendly and affectionate, they are actually as varied as any other group of individuals in terms of personality, abilities, interests, behaviour, social skills and self-management (Wishart, 2005).

The most marked features of FAS include low birth weight, a failure to thrive in the first years of life, retarded physical development, abnormalities of the central nervous system, delayed speech development and learning s peci f ic s y n dr o m e s 27 difficulties ranging from mild to severe (Davidson & Meyers, 2007).  Up to 50 per cent have additional handicaps in vision and hearing, or physical disorders including heart problems and abnormalities in limbs and joints (Weiten, 2001). The home environment of many children with FAS and FAE is often very far from ideal, particularly if the mother is a chronic alcoholic (as is most often the case).

It is also observed that some individuals with severe PDDs tend to regress in their language skills over time (Meilleur & Fombonne, 2009). It is suggested that these language problems may be due in part to an underlying auditory processing disorder (see Chapter 6). , 2009). However, children with Asperger syndrome and those with PDDNOS tend to be higher functioning, more responsive to intervention, and achieve a better level of adaptive behaviour and independence.
