This approach, in addition to providing valuable drugs, has yielded a wealth of information relating chemical structure and trypan ocidal activity for a great variety of compounds, but it has given little or no insight into the mechanism of drug action. As we have seen, presentday problems in the chemotherapy of trypanosomiasis differ greatly from those of fifty years ago. No longer is there an urgent need for a drug to combat an annual death rate of hundreds of thousands; the need is for more efficient prophylactic agents and for new drugs to attack drug-resistant variants.
