Aug. 24, 1972, Amsterdam, Holland Don Byas might very well have been a major participant in the Bebop movement had he not permanently moved to Europe in 1946. He had already extended the innovations of Coleman Hawkins and, although falling stylistically between swing and Bop, he was one of the most advanced tenor-saxophonists of the mid-1940s. Byas gained early experience as an altoist with Bennie Moten, Terrence Holder, and Walter Page's Blue Devils (1929). During 193132 Byas had a band (under the name of Don Carlos and His Collegiate Ramblers) back home in Oklahoma.
Don Byas on Blue Star shows how strong a player the tenorman was in 1947 and 195052. The earlier performances find Byas and several other members of the Don Redman band (trumpeter Peanuts Holland, trombonist Tyree Glenn, and pianist Billy Taylor) interacting with some fine French musicians, including altoist Hubert Rostaing. Byas is featured on the later dates with local rhythm sections, playing advanced swing that hints at Bebop. A Night in Tunisia and Walkin', which are from the same sessions, have Byas assisted by pianist Bent Axen, bassist Niels Pedersen, and drummer Williams Schiopffe.
