Coaching Point: It should be emphasized to the post players that this play is designed to let them use their best power moves. Page 27 Drill #18: Big Picks Little, Big Picks Big Objective: To safely inbound the ball using a box set. Description: The drill begins with the ball in the small forward's (SF) hands and the players positioned as shown in the diagram below. It is designed to use two big strong bodies to set two screens and free teammates for the inbound pass. The power forward (PF) moves up the lane to set a pick for the shooting guard (SG).
Description: The drill begins with the players stacked along the lane line as illustrated in Diagram A and the small forward (SF) inbounding the ball. All four players in the stack move simultaneously. The point guard (PG) shifts out high to provide an emergency outlet for SF. The shooting guard (SG) fakes into the lane and cuts to the corner to serve as the second option on the play. The center (C) acts like the pulling guard leading a sweep and crashes into the lane, taking anyone in front of him along for the ride.
SG breaks to the wing to receive the inbound pass (Diagram B), then reverses the ball through C to PF. After inbounding, the point guard (PG) breaks hard to the offside wing. If PG's opponent is playing tight man-to-man defense, PG goes backdoor looking for the pass from PF. If the backdoor is not available, PF passes to PG on the wing. SF and C have been reading PG's defender, and when the ball moves to PG on the wing, SF sets a backscreen for C, who cuts across the lane for a pass from PG (Diagram C).
